Welcome to NALSAR CENTRE FOR AIR & SPACE LAW (NCASL)

National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University of Law, Hyderabad is the 'Number One' rank-rated Law University in India (A.C. Nielsen-ORG-MARG Survey, 2008). The Centre for Air and Space Law (CASL) is one of the centers of excellence established by the University. Since its inception in 2005, the Centre has been working under the stewardship of Prof. V. Balakista Reddy (Head, Centre for Air & Space Law).  There are very few organizations across the globe which are paying heed to the very vast realms of Air and Space Law and amongst them the CASL has been working towards the process of spreading literacy in these fields since last five years. The Centre specialises in legal and policy issues regarding aviation and space activities in the broadest sense.

APJ Abdul Kalam’s Message

Space is a vantage point from which spacecraft provides a variety of services like communication, TV broadcasting, navigation, remote sensing and disaster monitoring. As you are aware that the world nations have evolved a mechanism for use of orbital slots. With the orbital slot crowding, particularly the geosynchronous orbit, it is essential for the legal community to study the laws and bye-laws of the existing laws and safeguard our interests. Another aspect, particularly in times of conflict, is that blocks of countries waging the war may create economic damage by switching off systems radiating to other countries. The reconnaissance satellite could also be made ineffective electronically. An in-depth analysis is required to simulate and understand the probable situation and work out adequate legal safeguards.
I have been proposing that space faring nations have to work together for a world space vision, reduce the cost per kg of orbital pay load from the present US$20000 to US$ 2000 per kg and enable many mass missions for exploration of MARS and Moon and transmit solar power from space. Such future cooperation will require not only major technological breakthroughs, but also improved legal understanding of various aspects for welfare of the entire humankind.

My best wishes to all of you for successful deliberations.

VC’s message

Right since its inception NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad has been a Centre of Excellence in legal academics in the form of research based-education. With its legacy of promoting excellence in legal academics and research in contemporary legal issues, the University has developed various Centres of Excellence involved in work in diverse areas of Law and Social Sciences. In an endeavour to set new standards in the realms of legal studies, I am happy to launch the centre's website. The Centre for Air and Space Law (CASL), established in the year 2005, aims at high quality research and studies in contemporary issues of concern in the areas of Space and Air Laws. Lately, Air and Space Laws have expanded in a big way and the Centre gives the researchers an opportunity to get insights in multiple issues and problems.
I am proud to say that few of our students have undertaken higher research in Air Law in leading Universities like Leiden and McGill Universities with prestigious scholarships and fellowships. As we proceed in our effort to nurture and sustain this ambitious venture, I would avail this opportunity to cordially invite your contributions to make our Endeavour a success.
